Meeting of SRHR coordination platform

On December 15, a final 2021 meeting of SRHR coordination platform took place. During the meeting, Tanadgoma presented its research “Sexual health problems among women with oncological diseases of reproductive system”. Also, annual results and future plans of an initiative group “Together for new life” – a group of patients with infertility problems – was presented to the platform members by founder of the group Tamar Kachlishvili.

At the end of the meeting its facilitator summarized results of 2021, thanked members for active engagement during the year and spoke about the future plans.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights needs of mental health patients

On December 17, 2021 Tanadgoma conducted a meeting, dedicated to presentation of findings and recommendations of a qualitative research “Studying needs related to sexual and reproductive health and rights patients with mental health problems”. The meeting was attended by psychiatrists, psychologists, reproductologists, social workers and representatives of mental health patients’ community. Along with the research, psychiatrist Marina Gegelashvili held a presentation “Needs for integration of mental health and reproductive health services – international experience”.

During the discussion participants shared their experience and cases from the practice, and talked about future steps to be undertaken, so that SRHR needs of persons with mental health problems are integrated into provision of medical, social and psychological services. It was agreed that at the first stage special informational materials shall be prepared for both patients’ caregivers and social workers. The aim of these materials is to raise awareness on SRHR topics. Besides, Tanadgoma plans to create a special guide on these issues for social workers.

The meeting was attended by oncologists, oncopsychologists, sexologists and reproductologists. After presentation of the research findings, experts discussed recommendations elaborated based on them. Besides presenting the research, Tanadgoma expert held a presentation on widespread sexual health problems encountered by women with oncological diseases. Also, a founder of oncopatients’ organization “Winner women’s club” Professor Tina Beruchashvili presented a research “Assessment of stigmatization factor and psychoemotional status among oncopatient women”.

Meeting participants discussed future steps that are needed to be taken for ensuring better response to SRHR needs of oncopatient women during provision of medical or psychological services. Etablishing Advocacy Network for Migration Issues (ANMI)

On November 4^th, 2021, nine CSOs, Tanadgoma among them, established the Advocacy Network for Migration Issues (ANMI). The ANMI member organizations will join efforts in identifying and solving migration-related issues. Specifically, the network members will prepare studies, recommendations, and legislative proposals, and conduct advocacy on migration issues.

“Rights Georgia” will be coordinating the activities of the network.

The ANMI was launched within the frames of the IOM-funded project – “Establishment of the Network of CSO’s tacking the migration issues and provision of legal assistance to foreign migrants in Georgia”.

Meeting of SRHR Coordination Platform

On September 28, 2021, a meeting of Coordination Platform of organizations working on SRHR was held.

The aim of the meeting was to agree upon concept and workplan of promotion of transformational changes in the field of sexuality education. The concept and workplan were presented by UNFPA Georgia office.

SRHR Coordination platform was established in 2019 by Center for Information and Counseling on Reproductive Health – Tanadgoma, with financial support of RFSU. The goal of the platform is to coordinate working on SRHR-related non-governmental and international organizations and to support sharing of experience, strategies and visions among them.

Innovative model of medical abortion provision – presentation of clinical trial results

On July 10, 2021, within the framework of the project “Improving access to abortion in Georgia”, the clinical trial results dissemination event was held at Rooms Hotel Tbilisi. Main goal of the clinical trial was to gather and assess data about safety, acceptability and feasibility of the medical abortion service provision model, which reduces number of unnecessary visits to the clinic. The meeting was conducted with participation of all interested parties, such as: state organizations – Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the occupied territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, pharmaceutical companies, local and international non-governmental organizations working on abortion, SRHR, women’s rights – Public Defender’s office, UNFPA, HERA XI, WISG, etc. Also, professional organizations, such as Georgian Obstetricians and Gynecologists Association, as well as clinical specialists from various health facilities took part in the meeting.

This meeting presented evidence not only about the innovative model of medical abortion provision and its costs, but also about satisfaction measured among research participants as well as healthcare providers. Involvement of key stakeholders through wide dissemination of the study findings and development of advocacy strategy for adoption of this model were the priorities. Discussion about how this model could be incorporated into existing healthcare system of Georgia was stirred and representatives of Ministry of Health and NCDC express high interests towards the model especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on this discussion, ideas about possible financing and advocacy strategy of the model would be elaborated and recommendations developed by the project implementers.

A blog “From an activist’s notes” of a journalist Irma Kakhurashvili has won the first prize in a competition conducted under campaign “This country is yours”, of the Civil Society Institute in 2020. UN Human Rights Council

Informal coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (consisting of the following organizations: EMC, Tanadgoma, Hera XXI, WISG, Equality Movement) submitted a detailed analysis of these rights in Georgia for the third cycle of United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Georgia.

The aim of the coalition was to ensure that the main recommendation uniting and underlying SRHR topics would be incorporation of evidence-based, age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education in national educational curriculum. This recommendation was presented at the several official as well as informal platforms.

During the session held on January 26, 2021, the state received 6 recommendations about inclusion of sexuality education based on UNESCO guiding principles. Recommendations were received from the following states: Uruguay, Mexico, Spain, Iceland, France and Luxemburg. It is important to mention that this is the first time when recommendations on CSE were given to Georgia. This is a big achievement for the coalition as well as for advocates of this topic.

Georgia shall respond to the recommendations received during this cycle of UPR in June 2021.
